Shelf-Stable Foods That Last 100+ Years

How to stock food that might outlast your great-grandchildren

We talk a lot about rotation in food storage.
FIFO—first in, first out. Rotate your canned goods, your MREs, your dry staples.

But here’s the thing… Some foods don’t need rotating.

Ever.

There’s a short list of “forever foods” that, stored properly, can last a century or more without going bad.

The kind of stuff you could bury in a sealed cache today and have someone dig up in 2124… still good to eat.

And if you’re thinking “Why would I need food that lasts 100 years?”—the answer is simple:

  • Minimal upkeep = less risk of forgetting to rotate

  • Deep backup for absolute worst-case scenarios

  • Perfect for off-site caches and long-term survival stashes

1. Honey

  • Nature’s perfect preservative. Archaeologists have found pots of honey in Egyptian tombs over 3,000 years old—still edible.

  • If it crystallizes, just warm it gently and it’ll return to liquid.

Pro Tip: Store in glass jars, not plastic. Lasts longer and resists chemical leaching.

2. White Rice (Mylar + O2 Absorbers)

  • Stored in an oxygen-free Mylar bag with oxygen absorbers, white rice can last a century.

  • Brown rice? Forget it—too much oil in the bran.

  • Cool, dry, dark location is key.

3. Salt

  • Pure salt never spoils.

  • Avoid iodized salt for long-term storage—it can degrade over time.

  • Essential for food preservation, curing meat, and even barter.

4. Sugar

  • White, brown, or powdered sugar can last indefinitely if kept dry and pest-free.

  • Like honey, it might harden—break it up and it’s fine.

5. Pure Maple Syrup (Unopened)

  • Unopened, sealed pure maple syrup can last a century or more.

  • Store it cool and dark. Once opened, refrigerate or can it again.

6. Distilled White Vinegar

  • Essentially immortal.

  • Use for pickling, cleaning, first aid, and countless other survival hacks.

7. Dried Legumes (Properly Stored)

  • Beans, lentils, chickpeas, split peas—if sealed in Mylar with O2 absorbers and kept cool, they’ll keep for 100+ years.

  • Cooking time may increase with age, but they remain safe to eat.

8. Hard Liquor (Unopened)

  • Whiskey, rum, vodka—these don’t expire if sealed properly.

  • Doubles as barter, morale booster, or even a disinfectant.

How to Store for a Century

The 3 killers of shelf life are:

  1. Moisture – Keep it bone dry.

  2. Oxygen – Use Mylar bags and O2 absorbers.

  3. Light/Heat – Store in cool, dark places.

Combine those, and you’ve got food that’s basically immortal.

A prepper’s food supply isn’t just about having enough—it’s about having the right mix of short, medium, and ultra-long shelf life foods.

These “forever foods” are your last line of defense.
Store them once, store them right… and you’ll never touch them again until you truly need them.

Stay fed. Stay ready.
